Are you ready to cut loose? The DIY Collective theatre production of the 80's classic Footloose at St Martin's Youth Arts Centre, South Yarra is on from November 9 to 11th.
It tells the tale of Ren McCormack - a rebellious newcomer who, by challenging a small town's strict ban on dancing, ignites a transformative journey that brings together the community and challenges longstanding traditions.
This stage adaptation features the film's award-winning soundtrack, including hits such as “Holding Out for a Hero”, “Let’s Hear It for the Boy”, and the titular “Footloose”, alongside additional music to bring the story to life.
Christian Chene brings his unique style and enthusiasm to the lead role, employing his powerful vocals for the demanding role.
Fergus Rann is an excellent Willard Hewitt, the quirky sidekick. He flawlessly executes comedic moments while the number “Mama Says” is a quintessential hilarious highlight.
The endearing teenage romance between Willard and Rusty (played by Nicola Wetselaar) melts hearts - especially through the sweet performance of "Let's Hear It For The Boy." Wetselaar has a powerhouse voice and Rann's dancing has the crowd in stitches.
Madison Peake's superb performance as Vi Moore is heart-wrenching, as she emphatically embracies the characters vulnerability and stoicism.
A touching moment arrives with "Holding Out For a Hero". Sarah Alyce, as Ariel Moore, showcases her vocal prowess. Other Standouts include Amy Cole as Wendy Jo, and Emma Burns as Chuck Cranston.
The DIY Collective has collected a mere 15 cast to put on a formidable live adaptation of a much-loved classic movie. Musical director, Camryn Jordans, has guided the cast brilliantly - bringing to the stage beautiful harmonies and a smooth sound.
The DIY Collective has presented a production that it can be proud of- a show that celebrates community, challenging the norm and cutting footloose.
